Visa opens its network to AI shopping agents with Intelligent Commerce

For an AI agent to buy something, it has to pass a payment safely — without your real card number ending up on every checkout page. Visa built its answer as Intelligent Commerce, announced April 30, 2025, opening its network to the AI agents that browse and buy on your behalf.

Instead of exposing your card, Intelligent Commerce issues tokenized credentials bound to a specific agent and use case, layered with real-time authorization and fraud monitoring, and lets you set the conditions and limits an agent must follow. Visa lined up a broad roster of AI partners — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Microsoft, Mistral, and Samsung — so the same rails can work across many assistants.

This is genuine infrastructure: it makes an agent’s purchase secure and revocable. What it doesn’t decide is whether the purchase is a good idea.
